In a game like chess, pity will get you nowhere. Hold comept for your enemy, strike him down, make move after merciless move to destory your opponents position and pysche. General indifferance of the opponent's emotional rainbow will help you greatly. P.S. It also helps if you make good moves.

True; in Chess you can not afford to let your opponent get in your head or you will lose. Thats why you always hear Blitz players talking so much smack, trying to psych the other guy out. You have to put emotion asided to play logically. But rather than contempt; you should hold high respect for your opponent. Always assuming that he is smart and will see your one-hit threats. Plan to slowly squeeze him into submission building up small advantages one-at-a-time. That way when he does blunder and miss your threat you can use it to your full advantage. In Chess the nice guy that gives take-backs usually loses and the guy who Blunders least usually wins.

I like to bait kids with taking extraordinarily long turns making them bored. If you take 15 minutes on a move they will usually move within seconds. Eventually they will make a mistake. Then out of nowhere you start blitzing them for 5 or 6 moves. I know some adults like this too.
